Faculty-researchers from the QSU-Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) Department facilitated a training on the SAFE-Quirino Dashboard on September 23-24, 2024, at the Learning Resource Center, Diffun Campus.
Organized by the University, in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Community Forest Foundation of Quirino Incorporated (CFFQI) of the Provincial Government of Quirino, the training aimed to prepare agricultural officers in various municipalities for the full adoption and utilization of the innovative agricultural management tool.
The SAFE-Quirino Dashboard, a cloud-based platform utilizing global information system (GIS) technology, is specifically designed for the province of Quirino. It empowers users to plot farmers’ residences, crop locations, and flood-prone areas, enabling enhanced spatial analysis and decision-making in agricultural management. The software offers a comprehensive solution for efficient management of agricultural activities within the province.
On the first day of training, Engr. Divine Grace D. Olaño, Project Leader, provided an overview of the system, including its GIS mapping features, farm data management capabilities, and reporting functions. With the assistance of Ms. Rosalinda N. Espaldon and Mr. Rodrigo Castillo, Engr. Olaño guided participants through hands-on exercises, ensuring they could effectively navigate the system and utilize its functionalities. The discussion also covered user interface overview, managing user access, account registration, data management, and GIS navigation.
Dr. Rocela Angelica B. Gorospe, Provincial Director of PSTO-Quirino, expressed her appreciation to QSU for developing and implementing the system, emphasizing its potential benefits to various municipalities in monitoring crop land area, rice, corn, and other high-value crops.
On the second day, resource speakers Mr. Roman Amor M. Flores and Mr. Rozilbert Joaquin, Jr. focused on GIS Mapping of the developed system. Mr. Joaquin Jr. facilitated a hands-on training on the use of GEO tagging using Google Earth Map to locate farmers’ land areas. He emphasized the importance of database processing, data management tools, data archiving and comparison, geometric networks, and other features supporting geoprocessing.
The SAFE-Quirino Dashboard was developed as output to collaborative research, titled “Support towards Smart and Sustainable Quirino: Sustainable Agriculture for Effective Disaster Risk Reduction Management using GIS Technology in Quirino (SAFE-QUIRINO).” The conduct of the study and management of the project was led by Engr. Divine Grace D. Olaño (QSU) and Engr. Grace Dorothy G. Vicente (CFFQI-PLGU), with team members Mr. Cliemtor B. Fabros, Ms. Rosalinda N. Espaldon, Mr. Rodrigo H. Castillo, Jr., Ms. Mhar Charr M. Marcelo, and Mr. Joey A. Dela Cruz.
The training concluded with participants sharing their learning insights and suggestions for the improvement of the developed system.
