It is a curios fact that people who write thousand-page textbooks still seem to find it necessary to write prefaces to explain their purposes. Enough is enough, one would think. However, every textbook – and this one is no exemption – is both an expression of dissatisfaction with existing books and a statement by the author of what he thinks such a book ought to contain, and a preface offers one last chance to be heard and understood.
