Until recently, “rare-earth element biochemistry” largely constituted (1) utilization of the 15 lanthanides (lanthanum to lutetium), plus yttrium and scandium, as nonnative, spectroscopic probes for binding sites of other metals, and (2) small-molecule metal complexes used as biological imaging agents (e.g., MRI contrast or luminescence-based probes).
